Benefits of Massage

The benefits of massage are many and massage therapy is a proven, effective treatment for many conditions. Stress and anxiety, muscle tension and soreness, chronic pain, overall wellness and even specific soft tissue injuries. A consultation with your therapist will determine the most beneficial techniques for your specific conditions.

Whether you’re considering massage to help relieve pain from injuries, medical issues, or are just looking for relaxation, you can rely on the licensed massage therapist at Harborview Health & Wellness to evaluate your conditions and recommend the correct technique, pressure and form of massage to relieve your symptoms. Massage therapy can provide relief from tired, aching muscles and ligaments and leave you feeling relaxed with reduced pain and swelling. From the moment you walk through the doors at the Belle La Vie Suites, you’ll be enveloped by  luxurious surroundings and caring staff.

What Are The Different Types of Massage?

There are many different types of massage. However, there are three that are the most common in this country. These three are called Swedish, Deep tissue, and trigger point therapy. All these types of massages involve pressure being applied to certain areas of the body. These pressure points are called acupressure points. Swedish massage involves soft, light strokes of the hands over the skin. A Swedish massage will usually include some kind of oil to help the massage. Deep tissue massage involves pressure to certain muscle groups. It can be done on specific parts of the body. Deep tissue massage is sometimes used to treat injuries. It is similar to Swedish massage. Trigger point therapy focuses on the muscles around the joints and spine. It is often used for pain relief.

About Kim

All the Crazy and a Smattering of Clever…

I grew up in the Chicagoland area…okay technically in Joliet, Illinois (Go Steelman!). I was able to live in San Diego (Mira Mesa), California for 5 years. Landed in the Quad Cities to live first on the Arsenal, and then spent the following 13+ years in Davenport. It was that transition from living on the Arsenal to Davenport is about the time I started my real education!

Learn More About Me

I was gifted a massage not long after my daughter was a toddler, and it was then that i realized that i really liked the idea of helping other people while being able to be a contribution to our bank account. I attended Institute of Therapeutic Massage and Wellness, and it was there that the spark to learn more about the human body was ignited! I went on to attend Palmer Chiropractic College’s undergrad program, that led to taking classes at Scott Community College, followed by Saint Ambrose University, and then finally the Doctorate program at Palmer Chiropractic College. Over the course of all this education, i maintained a small massage practice and have had my license/experience for 19 years and counting!

My massage therapy education has included a wide variety of techniques. After some discussion with contemporaries, we have decided that we “might” have a “small addiction” for learning more! I listed out what techniques I have learned in a toggle below this one (minor confession, sometimes I forget all the seminars that i have taken till i find the stack of certificates! ha!).

I have worked at Unity Point’s Hospice, a pain clinic, hair salon, as a massage school educator and continuing education educator, and always my own stand alone practice. It is now that I work in a great office space that has several different kinds of practitioners that are a tribe of women who are dedicated to serving others and supporting each other. I am honored to be a part of this tribe!

I am a mama to four kiddos (26, 23, 19, and 8), one fur baby, and wife to a retired army combat medic.

Stay posted as things are always changing and improving! I have a “hit list” of seminars / certifications that I want to take this year and next, so keeping aware of my social media postings may lead to opportunities to be the first to receive care in that which i received training in.

Myofascial Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (also referred to as simply MFLD) is a very gentle type of manual therapy used to drain excess fluid from the body and improve the overall functioning of the lymphatic (immune) system. MFLD is most commonly used to treat Lymphedema, which is characterized by the blockage of lymph nodes in the arms and legs.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage originated in Europe during the 1930s. It was first used on patients as an effective way to detoxify (ridding of waste) the body. Today, MLDT is still used as a way to improve the inner workings of the lymphatic system. The massage is applied gently in the direction of lymph flow in order to unblock any obstructed lymph vessels, and allow lymph flow to transport waste from the body freely.

MFLD is performed by a certified MFLD massage therapist, who applies a light form of pumping massage to their clients skin. MFLD is applied in gentle strokes towards the heart. This technique will lightly stretch the walls of the lymph vessels and encourage lymph drainage.

During your MFLD treatment your massage therapist will use the Myofascial Pump Technique to gently stretch the skin and fascia to encourage drainage of lymph.

We are able to palpate and evaluate each client’s current condition and to develop treatment protocols for managing multiple medically complex lymph-related pathologies. We focus especially on lymphedema, and people at risk for lymphedema due to cancer, lymph node removal and radiation.

Contraindications

Contraindications happen when an increase in lymph flow would be detrimental. Contraindications can either be absolute or relative. The physician can override relative contraindications if he or she finds good reason, but the absolute contraindication cannot be overridden!

Absolute Contraindications : Lymphatic drainage is not appropriate at this time.

Acute Inflammation
Malignant tumors
Thrombosis (Blood clot)
Major heart problems including Congestive Heart Failure and Heart Attack - Increasing lymph flow may increase the cardiac load and increase pulmonary edema.

Relative Contradictions: Adjustments to the treatment usually address the situation.

Kidney problems – check with the physician before treating.
Bronchial asthma – this can stimulate the Vagus nerve bringing on an attack.
Thyroid problems – no treatment around the throat.
Medications – fear of increasing the dosage by draining the interstitial spaces.
Chemotherapy – fear of increasing the dosage by draining the interstitial spaces.
Removed spleen – recommend shorter session first.
Menstruation – MFLD can increase the flow.

Why does my body have the ripples, dents, bulges?!

Congested tissue can cause poor circulation, you'll note that areas prone to dimpling, lumps and bulges are often cool to the touch. lymphatic flow may also be restricted by lack of movement. Additionally the anatomical structure of fatty tissue in the hip, thigh and buttock area, as well as genetics, hormones and lifestyle all contribute to the dimpled "look" of cellulite.

Where did Lypossage come from?

The treatment is a specific blend of massage modalities that derive from physical therapy, including deep lymphatic massage and myofascial massage. It was created by Charles W. Wiltsie III, B.S., LMT, and internationally recognized massage therapy educator and therapist. Mr. Wiltsie conducted a year long study of 100 female subjects that documented the effectiveness of the technique, which was published in massage and bodywork magazine in 1999. Follow-up research was done in Belgium with positive results published in Healthy Aging Magazine and then again in Dermascope Magazine. In the original study the average person lost almost 6.75 inched between the navel and the mid-thigh...with the loss per thigh of almost 1.5 inches over six week's time.

Where do we begin?

We want to do a consultation to make sure that lypossage is a good fit for your body and goals.

Lypossage is split into 3 different zones and we will work together to determine which zone(s) to target.

A single zone lypossage session is approximately 30 mins in duration. For premium results, it is highly recommended to do a series of 18 sessions. This will include before/after pictures and measurements at the first session, and then every third session. these will be private, unless permission is given to share the amazing results of our work together.

Consultation can be scheduled online via my online scheduler 24/7. During the consultation we will set up scheduled lypossage sessions that I will input on the scheduler to ensure that you can receive consistent care!

Appointment Policy

These are honestly uncertain times. We have never experienced times like this before…well not at this level. This is just as much about YOUR health & wellness, as it is about MINE & my FAMILY’S.

With that being said, moving forward if you feel unwell, please stay home and take care of yourself. We would rather you reschedule and recoup, than add an additional stressor to your body. We also can not take care of clients if we are sick ourselves(or if a family member is ill) and will also notify any clients with plenty of prior notice.

Cancellation Policy

No one REALLY wants to miss their Massage Appointment, but things come up and I get that.

You should value my time as much as I value yours.

Inability to keep an appointment should be followed by reaching out by text or email to let me know (24 HOURS MINIMUM) prior to the scheduled appointment that can not be made. If this minimum notice is not given to our office, there will be a Cancellation Fee charged to any card on file.

No Call No Show will result in not being allowed to scheduled online from that point moving forward, and will get the next appointment I potentially have available.

Health & wellness is a priority.

There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.

Why I do this thing called Massage Therapy

Why I do this thing called Massage Therapy

FAQ

Ways To Save

I like a good saving as much as the next person, and so here are some ways to get the most bang for your buck:

Health Spending/Flexible Spending Account ~ There are some employers that rock and offer either of these accounts. You can reach out to Human Resources of said employer, and ask if Massage is covered, and if a referral is required.

Do I Have To Be Naked?

No. You can be as clothed, or not, as you want to be if that is what makes you comfortable! You will always be appropriately covered, and only the body part(s) that I am working on will be exposed. I have extensive training that includes being fully clothed and not. I just want you to be comfortable, so at the very least wear comfy stretchy clothes if you choose to not disrobe.

This is YOUR appointment and I will accommodate you to the best of my ability.

Do You Have Any Other Questions?

Do not be afraid to reach out and ask, because it is likely others are probably wondering too!

So email any questions to harborviewhealthandwellness@gmail.com
